Zingy Awards to facilitate Indian interior designers and architects

In a major initiative to provide a distinct recognition to the interior designers and architects of India, Zingy Homes is organizing an online award event to facilitate the interior designers and architects who have been working behind the scenes incessantly and creating beautiful spaces for us to live and work in. The awards will be announced online by the end of October.

Zingy Awards is intended to provide the interior designers and architects with a platform to help them gain visibility in the mainstream. The awards will be adjudged for the following categories – Best Commercial Architect, Best Commercial Interior Designer, Best Residential Architect, and Best Residential Interior Designer. Both firms and individuals can apply before October 5th 2013 to participate in the contest. The applicants may submit more than one project and apply for multiple categories. The jury panel features award winning professionals with years of experience in design and architecture. They are Karsten Gori and Uffe Leth from Denmark, David Hotson from US and Royston Wilson from Australia. Apart from a stellar jury that comprises award winning architects, the unique feature of this online awards program is the public voting module which means that each entry will also be ranked by the number of votes it receives from the general public. The judging parameters are design excellence and suitability to challenge, creativity and originality, functionality, problem solving ability, sustainability, aesthetic appeal and last but not the least-execution and finish quality.

Interior designers and architects have always influenced the way a community lives. They have worked hard all their life to materialize the dreams of various homeowners and businessmen. Yet, there has been neither reward nor recognition for their earnest endeavors. The painter who painted that masterpiece and the designer who weaved that fabulous wedding trousseau is known to the general public, then why do these folks who design beautiful spaces for us to live and breathe in remain faceless?

Zingy Awards are oriented towards encouragement in the field of art and architecture. As the founders say, the idea is to have the general public recognize their work just as easily as they recognize a Manish Malhotra or a Hussain. With the public voting feature, Zingy Awards is being billed as a platform that would bring lakhs of homeowners in direct touch with the participating architects and designers. The community feels that these awards will act as a catalyst and motivate more professionals to bring in new innovation and out-of-the-box approach which in turn will bring them more visibility and popularity. The project listings will remain on the site even after the awards program is over.

To sum up, for an architect or interior designer, participation in the Zingy Awards might help gain competitive edge over several others in the row. With their names pinned on the wall of fame, they would be easily approachable to customers across the country. Also, it would uncover better options for various homeowners when it comes to finding the best professionals for home remodeling and renovation.

Rabih Mroue's 'The Pixelated Revolution' at Dharamshala International Film Festival

Rabih Mroué’s multipart project The Pixelated Revolution, 2012, explores the role of social media, texting and mobile phone cameras in informing and mobilizing people during the current Syrian revolution. Mroué investigates this newly emerged form of ‘immediate documentary’ produced by persons directly involved in regions of active and acute violence due to a shortage of professional journalists. Mroué juxtaposes the immediacy of shocking, live footage downloaded off the internet originating from cell phones held by citizen journalists often being shot at and killed themselves, or in the artist’s words “filming their own death”, with succinct quotes about the ‘rules’ of pure film loosely based on Dogma 95, the cinematographic manifesto of Danish filmmakers Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. Mroué thereby draws parallels to the advice and precise instructions regarding the taking of photographs and their dissemination via the medium of Facebook and other virtual communication tools for protesters.

Mroué examines various aspects of this new form of photographic documentation asking whether mobile phones of Syrian protesters become an extension of their bodies or whether the familiar look of the phone display or camera lens may convey a false sense of immunity. Mroué further considers in what manner we can envisage the photographic traces broadcast by Syrians in the vast, ever changing universe of the Internet, framed by incomplete downloads, pixelated images, and ruptured modes of communication. In addition, the artist calls into question his own as well as the viewer’s ‘outside’ position, making and viewing art in studios and institutions rather than joining protesters on the streets, stating “One of the things we always say is that art needs distance, and that art needs a kind of peace. But at the same time, with the revolution in Tunisia, or the revolution in Egypt, or the violence in Syria, when are we allowed to talk about it? How long do we have to wait before we can make a work? I think there are no limits, no defined times.”
