The founders of Sahasra Deepika Foundation for Education received a special honor from the Indian International Film Academy (IIFA)
on April 24 at IIFA Rocks! in Tampa, Florida. The Ramakrishnas are being
recognized for their heroic work in bringing education, hope and opportunity to
impoverished children in Bangalore, India. For over 15 years they have provided
residential education and care to children on Sahasra Deepika's campus.
Currently 60 girls live and learn at Sahasra Deepika Institute, and 17 are in
college. The organization also conducts outreach programs to benefit children
in slum scools in Bangalore.
Accepting on their behalf is their son, Naren Ramakrishna,
MD, PhD, Director, Proton Beam Therapy, Neuro and Pediatric Radiation Oncology,
Univ. of Florida Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health, and a resident of
Orlando, who will walk the runway during the star-studded fashion show on April
24, 2014 at IIFA Rocks! "We are tremendously honored by this accolade that
is being bestowed upon us by IIFA. We thank the selection committee for shining
a spotlight on our efforts to transform the lives of children through
education."
