Sonaakshi Sinha walks the ramp for Mainsh Malhotra to open LFW SR 2014

Romance, colour, style and creativity flowed down the catwalk when Bollywood’s top designer, Manish Malhotra opened the Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 season with a collection called “A Summer Affair”. Bollywood’s current hot star Sonaakshi Sinha made a graceful entry in a long floor kissing sheer black kurta with stunning white embroidery to set the mood of the very delicate ethereal collection.

Summer was in full bloom as the Hotel Grand Hyatt Ballroom turned into a mini forest. Tree trunks curved elegantly along the ramp. Clumps of blossoms and creepers flowed down from the ceiling. A thick arch of gorgeous foliage was the entrance to the ramp as the ambience spelt pure romance all set for “A Summer Affair”.

Fashion for the coming season according to Manish, top image stylist and couturier for the stars, had a new style emphasis as a mélange of fabrics came together to form a perfect confluence for about 60 ensembles showcased on the runway.

Intricate Chantilly lace, translucent georgette, sheer organza, sensuous cotton tulle with a creative addition of white thread embroidery and shimmer blended in perfect harmony for the garments that were ideal for sultry summer soirees.

While staying true to his favourite navy blue and grey, Manish turned more unconventional by adding shades of pink – blush to pale pink – for the collection. The designer also allowed neutral beige, white and black to complete the colour spectrum.

It was a romantic line that played lovingly with layers to present a stylish luxurious fashion statement. The concept of print-on-print, overlapping embellishments and tonal hues gave the ensembles a creative direction in the art of fine dressing.
For women’s wear Manish teamed cute boleros with striking kurtas, while summery skirts that kissed the floor had practical pockets and comfy slim pants were great additions. Adding visible zips to the pre- stitched saris and cholis, Manish turned the 6-yard wonder into statement pieces that will delight the unconventional dressers.

The dress kurta with the cinched waist was constant and so was the white embroidery in myriad designs. Sheer tank tops appeared over kurtas while wide pleated palazzos looked ravishing under long covers in Chantilly lace. For detailing there were tiny collars that crept on to kurtas and cholis.

For men’s wear, prints were in a profusion of colours, along with tonal embroidery and layers for different jackets. Printed sherwanis were totally replaced by the tonal Bundies and bundgalas to complete the look.

Bringing a style direction for men, Manish turned the popular kurtas into shirt-kurtas for lazy summer lounging and teamed them with cotton and linen trousers instead of the restricting churidars.

The final line of yellow, ecru and pastel prints for both men’s and women’s wear was creatively portrayed by Manish. Sexy swing coat and pants, long gowns, high neck women’s sherwanis, as well as a tiny printed three-quarter sleeve choli worn with a luxurious lehenga were an interesting end to the show.

For lovers of romance and alluring fashion, “A Summer Affair” by Manish Malhotra was an unforgettable grand opening for Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014.
