Capital wakes up to another Celebration of Drama with International Drama Festival at 16thBharat Rang Mahotsav 2014

The cold winds are whistling between the window panes, and the sun is not tiring from its mischievous game of hide and seeks, the city is under a mystic spell of the famous Delhi winters and the fog has completely turned the citizens into a bit more Eskimo looking attires. It is that time of the year when Delhi’s weathers have seemingly frozen the human souls and their lively spirits. The city is under a wintry spell and after welcoming the New Year with zest and zeal it’s time Delhi looks up to celebrate the warmth of life and human emotions. It’s time again to warm up Delhiites souls with the drama of human emotions. It’s time for Bharat Rang Mahotsav.

Even countries like Srilanka, Japan, Israel, China, Poland and Germany which are steeped in theatre culture, brings in seven performances in this year’s international festival. Hence, NSD being the apex theatre institution of the country is reaching out to every nook and corner of the country where drama and theatre exists and survives. With such exchange of knowledge and culture NSD aims to be the ultimate platform of theatre and cultural exchanges in theatre not only in India but with other countries as well where theatre is alive.”

Shri Ratan Thiyam, Chairperson, National School Of Drama Society says, “Integrating theatre from all parts of the nation and also taking it to varied audience has been an integral part of the vision of NSD for Bharat Rang Mahotsav. North East has a culturally rich and potentially strong theatre movement. Missing Bharat Rang Mahotsav’s presence in the region will be a loss to the art and culture lovers of North East. Hence, the parallel festival is targeted in the North East this year.”

Apart from the theatre shows, Bharat Rang Mahotsav this year will also be bringing the national theatre luminaries and their international counterparts together on one platform. Delhi artist shows wings of imagination have no limits

Imagination is like a flying bird with wings, and the desire to give a shape to this imagination is the spirit's wings to great art.

Perhaps that is what drove artist Manu Singh to explore the elemental imaginary landscapes which look like water, earth or sky.

WINGS, SHADOWS & 1000 BIRDS, a solo exhibition of paintings by Manu Singh is being held at the Shridharani Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, from 2nd to 12th January. The inauguration is on 2nd January at 5.00  pm.

WINGS, SHADOWS & 1000 BIRDS is full of large canvas paintings that explore imaginary background and landscapes. These works involve more obfuscation of the Imaginary Large Wings, Shadows and 1000 Birds using oil and other elements as mediums.

As the artist says: “I’ve always been drawn to WINGS since I was a child. The wings are symbol of aspiring to the greatest heights of accomplishment. Wings (white in color) stands for clarity of mind, and how clean mental focus combined with stable footing can transform our lives in magical ways. From time immemorial, birds are considered to be signs of eternal life. Many stories and folklore suggest that birds were taken as signs of renewed life, often as a transition between life and death. My works 1000 BIRDS represent joy, harmony, ecstasy, balance, and love. It denotes a sunny outlook in life, spiritual freedom and psychological liberation. It is symbolic of a transition or spiritual awakening also refer to the craving of an individual for the inner child, which would obviously mean innocence - shadow through which I am trying to explain how our shadow side holds the key to our inner self. Each of us has a shadow that whispers stories of our own self-defeating fears to us. My work shows how understanding our own shadow side can lead us to lives of tremendous realization and peace.”

The artist says she wanted to see how far he could can push reality to the other side where the “real” is still recognizable, but start becoming partially surreal. She wanted to see how far he can push both the real and the surreal at the same time into one another, building that tension until they are just one and the same.

Most canvases are black and white paintings with a modern touch, in that the strokes explore movement while the grey field stays constant most of the time. She has experimented with supports as well as with medium. “The possibilities of support/surface fascinate me. Without colour, value is easier to see and to judge. It is easier to understand atmospheric perspective without color. I had to make use of tools other than color to create the illusion of depth, thus I am trying to use more energy and imagination in the paintings that these mediums create.”

In a critique, renowned art critic M L Johny says: “My attempt as an art critic here is to see how the metaphor of wings gives a new edge to the works of Manu Singh though it is apparently clear that the wings are the symbols of hope. According to my view, a pair of wings, even when it is grown in an imaginative plane, is a price that has been exchanged for what one already has, which could be freedom, autonomy, beauty, despair or bondage. Wings as a metaphor itself foregrounds the fact that one has to leave or reject something one already possesses.”

Trained under the guidance of Master Artist Rameshwar Broota at Triveni Kala Sangam, Manu simultaneously joined the University of Geneva (Design & Art Department), Switzerland, as student support.

Manu, who lives and works in New Delhi, had solo shows at Lalit Kala Akademi (2011) & Shridharani Gallery (2014). She has participated in the AIFACS (2009, & 2010), Ravi Jain (2012), Sahitya Kala Parishad (2013 annual shows), and in number of group shows viz Dhoomimal Gallery, Open Garden Gallery, Triveni Gallery & Arpana Kaur Gallery.

She was commissioned to make paintings for All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Center in Delhi India in 2011. Her work is held in collection with AIIMS Trauma Center, The Lalit, Delhi, The Art Mall, Delhi, Private collections, Switzerland Contemporary Design & Art Collection.

Designer Pawan Sachdeva’s tips for New Year Partywear

1) How to look stylish and different?

To look stylish and different, try something new or add up an element which is trendy, fashionable and yet stands out.  Whatever you wear, please keep in mind the three thumb rules, Fit, Fabric and Style.

For a Night Club Party :

Men– A nice coloured and well fitted shirt or a v neck t-shirt paired with Jeans and add to it a velvet jacket with a satin pocket square. Or go in for a smart leather jacket. Complete the look with formal leather or suede shoes.

Women - Add colour and sparkle to your outfit.  Opt for colours like royal blue, dark pinks, etc. you can match them with your black tights or skirts, if you want to or just flaunt a colourful one piece dress and do not just go in for LBD. If at all you have to then add a dash of colour and bling with makeup and accessories. Opt for a sequins mini for a daring look.

 Outdoor

Men – Leather trench coat paired with leather Pants. You can even pair them with well fitted denims and winter boots

Women – For an outdoor party, stick to dresses with capes. You can also go in for coloured or blingy tights or leather pants and pair them with stylish sequin  with leather jackets and leather boots. If you are opting for a mini dress, top it with a jewelled tone blazer.

Formal

Men - Give a twist to your Cass black & White Tuxedo and stand out in a party. Opt for a monochromatic pattern instead of a plain black or plain white.  And make sure you wear a bow tie. You can also go in for a well fitted one button suit and add a dash of colour with your tie and pocket square.

Women – Flowy evening gowns or a well styled one piece dress.

2) Colours, fabrics and styles that will be in?

Men - Experiment with colours and try burgundy, shades of green like jade, bottle green, rust, mustard, burnt orange, purple, etc.  Theses colours can either show in your shirt, t-shirt, blazer, jeans or even tie and a pocket square.  And if you are opting for Black & white, then try to combine the two and create effects like monochromatic pattern, etc.

Women - You need to stand out in the crowd, so don’t just stick to a little black dress or a bright red dress, your outfit should be stylish trendy and colourful.  And if you are opting for Black & white, then try to combine the two and create effects like ombre, match black lace with nude colour, etc.
As far as fabrics are concerned,  stick to 100% fabrics, be it wool, leather, velvet, satin or silk, etc.

 3) What about accessories and footwears?

Men-

Footwear : For Men, with formal attire, wear black, brown or tan  lace-up, slim & pointed  leather shoes, with jeans, match them with lace-up shoes in suede or leather and for an outdoor party opt for leather boots.

Accessories : for a formal look, accessories to look out for  are ties, pocket squares, belts and shoes. For a less formal look, one can add mufflers, hat, stylish leather boots.

Women-

Footwear : For Formal party, opt for a nice pair of heels preferably matching the outfit and not just plain black. It could be metallic or a coloured heel if you are opting for a black dress. For an outdoor party, leather boots will be a safer bet. For clubbing opt for a more comfortable pair of shoes

Accessories : Don’t overdo with accessories. You must add a tingle of sparkle and colour to your look with accessory but stick to minimum.

4) Style tips ?

New Year’s Eve parties are some of the most stylish events of the year. Normal fashion rules normally go right out the window, and sparkle and shine take over the night. Whether one chooses sequins, metallics or the little black dress, the key is to dress for one’s figure. Don’t follow fashion blindly.  Opt for a style that suits your body type and also in sync with the place you are going to.

Tarun Tahiliani’s Couture at Aamby Valley India Bridal Fashion Week 2013

The fifth edition of Aamby Valley India Bridal Fashion Week in association with AZVA at Hotel Grand Hyatt, Mumbai on Day 1 showcased Tarun Tahiliani’s collection.

Staying true to his cultural roots and adding his characteristic couture touches to the collection, Worlddestination.com presented Tarun Tahiliani’s rich collection replete with glitz and glamour at the Aamby Valley India Bridal Fashion Week 2013.

Bare wooden frames and arches created a dramatic décor for the stark black stage and ramp, while abstract design chandeliers rose to the ceiling at the start of the show.

Eight contemporary male and female dancers from the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts danced gracefully between sections of the show, to movements innovatively choreographed by artistic director Jayachandran Palazhy creating a the perfect start to an amazing show.

Moving seamlessly from the grandeur of royal India for the ensembles to the more finely structured intricate techniques that gave style and elegance, Tarun added Indian craft in all its glory to create a visual and stylish impact on the ramp.

Taking the audience back into an era when hand crafted creations with ornate thread work were a “must have” for bridal trousseaux, Tarun worked with ivory silk threads for panelled kurtas, splashed with opals, pearls and Swarovski crystals. Saris had antique gold, silver, jamavaar, gotta, chikankari and Bandhani work; while brocade and zardosi livened up the kalidaar kurtas.

THE GOLDEN COLLECTION
Created from Italian lamé jersey, which hugged the sexy curves of the models, the Grecian goddess creations were a dream to behold. Drapes which are Tarun’s forté were taken to a higher level, while the sari with the pallav had a fusion influence. 3D flowers, chain mail dupatta, hand embroidery and Swarovski created a gracious elegant fashion statement.

The combination of Grecian and Amrapali like silhouettes gave the creations an unbelievable touch. Tarun’s clever folds turned the lovely models into goddesses, as tulle sparkled for rouched lehengas, churidars emerged under drapes, loose jersey pants with cowl neck kurtas, harem pants and overlapping tunics caused a gold rush on the catwalk.

The gold fishtail gown with crystal encrusted bodice and the pre- stitched lehenga/sari creations were visions in innovative construction. Boleros gave gowns an exciting touch and fabric tassels at the sides of figure hugging creations cascaded down seductively.

THE ENCHANTED FOREST
Straight from the beautiful forest came shades of pink, ivory, beige and red to create fairy tale garments. Colours of the peacock blue were one of the highlights of this collection while necklines were innovative and classic saris were teamed with Obe belts, capes or bustiers to impart an international touch. Intricately embellished dupatta, floor length kurtas with traditional crafts, saris with heirloom borders and lehengas with a forest of flowers matched the theme of the section.

Inspired by the flamenco dancer, hints of Spanish touches were observed in the long full trains for the concept saris. Bling was understated but very much there to offer a stylish option.

The red bridal Saat Pheras creations were breath taking in all their beauty. The final pale blue lehenga with lavish crystal embroidery and pearl studded work with silver touches was what brides dream of all their lives.

THE MAN OF THE HOUR
Men’s wear was given a major boost by Tarun with draped dhotis created from Kanjeevaram saris and sherwanis with intricate detailing. Giving a clever fashionable twist to the bandhgala, Tarun added a jersey stole in the neckline. Model and actor Asif Azim was seen scorching the ramp in one of his creations. There were structured cummerbunds in fusion form, in shades of jade, pleated royal blue and jewelled choices. Rich velvet sherwanis had embroidered necklines and cuffs but often pleated collars replaced lapels.

Tarun Tahiliani’s bridal collection which was a superb display of craft, style and couture will gladden the hearts of brides and grooms when they say their “I Do”

The year-long celebration began on 22nd December, 2013 with a Mega Cultural evening as the Curtain Raiser. Various socio-cultural organisations of Delhi & NCR, Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata, USA, UK and Kuwait have already consented to be part of the celebration.

The celebration aims at making the new generation Assamese people specially the global Non-resident Assamese aware about Bezbaroa and inspiring them with his ideals in being connected to their roots and in being proud of their heritage. The celebration will also create awareness at National level about Bezbaroa as a great litterateur and a social reformer of India.

Lakshminath Bezbaroa was a product and part of the intellectual awakening of India in the 19th century. He made pioneering contributions to almost all forms of Assamese literature - poems, novels, short stories, collection of folk tales, dramas, biographical works and satirical essays. 125 years back, in then Calcutta, it was he who as a student inspired and led many Assamese youth to set up an organisation for development of Assamese language which was instrumental in rejuvenating Assamese literature by publishing literary magazines ‘Jonaki’ and ‘Banhi’.

Bezbaroa with the help of a few Assamese students rekindled confidence in the minds of Assamese people by reminding them about their heritage, brought out Srimanta Sankaradeva and Madhavadeva from the ‘Sattras’, the monasteries of Assam, to the public life. Bezbaroa lived most part of his life in Kolkata and Orissa but still made gigantic contributions. So, Bezbaroa is considered as the role model for the global non-resident Assamese people to preserve their cultural identity for their own good. The occasion of Bezbaroa’s 150th birth anniversary is chosen to inspire them to contribute to the motherland, to imbibe, practice mother tongue and pass on to the next generation. This will help in preserving the diverse cultural and linguistic landscape of Assam having numerous ethnic languages which are already endangered as per UNESCO’s report and will also help Assamese language as the connecting language for all ethnic groups.

Shri Kuldip Nayar, the veteran journalist, human right activist, author and a nominated Member of Rajya Sabha was invited as the Chief Guest. Shri B. K Handique, Member of Parliament, Loksabha, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Sarod Maestro and a few dignitaries were also invited as Guests of Honour.

A beautiful song of Bezbaroa termed as ‘Asom Sangeet’- Music of Assam was presented in chorus by a group of men and women, Boys and girls  in the beginning.
Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan, the young exponents of Indian classical music were invited to perform in the event. They enthralled the audience with their sarod recital.

Smti Jayanti Chattopadhyay, Retired Professor of MIL Department of Delhi University released the Souvenir, published to commemorate the occasion. The Souvenir is edited by Dr Bipul Kumar Baruah.

Then an audio of a song specially written by reputed lyricist Shri Sarat Barkakati for the occasion and dedicated to the Non-resident Assamese people was released.

Angaraag Papon Mahanta, the icon of Assam who has successfully experimented fusion with Assamese folk music in Coke Studio and sung popular bollywood numbers like Jiyein Kyun, Zindagi Aisi Waisi, Kyon then hypnotized the audience with his lively performance and rendition of popular numbers.

The packed audience of the cultural evening stood up and joined in singing the State anthem of Assam-‘O mor aponar desh’ at the close of the programme.
