Fashion designer Poonam Dubey, who debuted on the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) said her elder brother, actor Manoj Bajpayee, provoked her to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer.
Poonam absorbed the culture, rituals and vibes of the states like Gujarat and Rajasthan and came up with the collection “Desert Rose”: Spring-Summer 2014 collection at Wills India Fashion Week.
Her inspiration came from the richness and creativity that is so common in these states. From elegantly dressed women, who are simple but bold in their attitude to the landscape of the desert with surreal calmness in its outlook, the states exude admirable splendour in every aspect.
Poonam Dubey says, “It is hard to find the rich cultural and artistic diversity anywhere else that we have in India. People, places, architectural marvels, food, crafts, festivals – everything about India is so inspiring and vibrant in every sense.
Even foreigners are not untouched by the richness of our country, who keep coming back here to learn something new, which they find missing in their own cultures.
So, being part of this culture, it would have been almost impossible to detach myself from my roots. Hence, I designed this collection, which is about real India that is truly beautiful.”
Poonam’s collection incorporated techniques like Tie & Dye, embellished with artistic mirror work and gorgeous prints, mirroring age old traditions of Indian skilled artistry. It was further beautified by the choice of fabrics like Chanderi, Khadi, Silk, Mulmul and Cheese Cotton that are prominently used in the garments.
Staying true to the nature of states, Poonam purposely chose the colour palate of ivories, mustards, indigos, browns to bring out the rustic nature of her collection.
